1. Self Promo idea

Not been blogging much lately but to update you with my current self promo brief, my idea is to play on the saying ‘it does exactly what it says on the tin’ but change it to ‘i am exactly what it says on the tin’. Within the tin will contain things that represent me aswell as my cv and business card.

At the moment i have developed my logo quite alot and pretty much have my business card ready to print, next few days i will be making the tin label very nice and i am thinking of taking a typographic approach onto it. Also need to set up my website and finish off my cv and covering letter.

So a busy next few days then 2nd year is over, time has flew since i’ve started uni!

The first ones have numbers in the top corners. They refer to this list made by Keri Smith, which inspired this whole journal. And I’ve actually gone up to 99 things to do with a tin can. But I scanned this a while ago. And I’m too lazy to re-scan it. Maybe I will later…

    Useful!

  7. Blackberry 9860 - Critical Review

For christmas I got the Blackberry 9860, I was really happy because my previous phone was the HTC and it was on its last life. I did my research on the blackberry and the spec on the phone was really good- lots of RAM and big clear touchscreen with a auto focus camera. After having it for a few days I wanted to go back to my old broken HTC- reasons being that the App market for blackberry was terrible, Android and Apple app stores are great…millions of apps most of them are free and alot of them actually work! The blackberry market didn’t contain many apps and the ones they did have were shit or they were only free on a 7 day trial.

After checking my facebook, twitter and hotmail throughout the day i noticed that the battery on the blackberry wouldn’t last a few hours in uni- nevermind a whole day out and another little thing was how I couldn’t keep track on how much of my monthly allowance i had used. It was a really nice phone though, and was very fast such a shame that the software and lack of apps makes it into a shit phone. I ended up selling the phone on ebay and buying a new HTC phone.

  9. Bungee Jump experience - Critical Review
For my birthday I received a voucher of Melissa for an experience day to do a 300ft bungee jump at Salford Quays over the river. I have always wanted to try something that gave me a high adrenaline rush, just the thought of being tied up via your ankles with rope and dropping 300ft off a crane did it for me. On the day of the bungee jump I wasn’t really bothered that I was going to do the jump, even as I was driving down to Salford Quays the nerves still didn’t kick in.All wrapped up warm and prepared as we arrived at 1pm in our tracksuit bottoms and big hoodys, it was a very windy day and the breeze was freezing. We couldn’t find the jump location at first but it is based where all the water sports are played. My jump was at 1.30pm so we had time to play with, when you arrive you have to sign forms to inform the people whether you have any health problems…you were then weighed- depending on which weight category you were in you got a certain number written on your hand (this is for the staff to know how strong of rope you will need for the jump).
There were around 12 people who were jumping before me and watching the crane go up and the people dropping off, it was funny so see their reactions…some screamed, some yelled and some just didn’t even make a noise. So finally, I was in the group of 5 to get tied up (shoes were recommended to be taken off as it was our responsibility if they fell into the river)…they put this really thick velcro strap EXTREMELY tight around your ankles and you had to sit on the 5 chairs and wait your turn to jump. Even as i was sitting and waiting the nerves still hadn’t kicked in, I was so confident that I wouldn’t scream because I never usually scream at anything.
So one by one people jumped and finally it was my turn…the crane carriage was waiting where i had to hop over and into the crane. The guys in there give you talk to shit you up like ‘you’ll be fine, no one’s fell and died this week, don’t worry!’ and at the time it was just awkward laughter…as the crane went up building and people below me became tiny, this is where the nerves kicked in. Heart pounding ridiculously fast  as we had reached 300ft I was asked ‘to step over the side of the crane, not to look down and to slowly push my weight forward with my arms open abit like a bird’. I was so very near to pulling out but it would of been £60 waste of money, I looked over the side and all i could see were tops of buildings, the river and little tiny people. I was actually shitting my self at this stage, i just didn’t look down and leant forward…then i dropped. a massive ARGGGHHHHH came roaring out of me, Words cannot explain the fear i had as i was falling, being tied up by just my ankles and nothing for my arms to hold onto, i think it is safe to say i felt as if i was falling to my own death- as the bungee rope pulled me back up each drop felt like a little mini bungee jump at one point my rope had stretched so much i was very near touching the river. I was hanging upside down for about 2 minutes whilst the crane slowly lowered down for the staff to drag me in.
The adrenaline rush i got whilst doing that jump was crazy, for days i was going on about it to my friends trying to describe the feeling of falling from 300ft. I think im confident that I will NEVER do a bungee jump again- yet i still want to try a sky dive? The bungee jump is definitely worth a try though, its just one of them things you can tick off in your life achievements.

  11. Reflective writing - Salford Carnival prep

Salford University held an event for the design students to meet the local design industry and show the style of work, giving opportunities for potential work experience or placements. The theme the university had this year was based around a carnival, the students got given a brief earlier on in the year where they were to design a Freaky styled typeface and a poster to help promote the Salford Carnival event.

The event was originally based at Media City, however a few weeks before the event the location changed to Islington Mill. To make the event look the part, we were asked to help design props such as cutting out cardboard lions, bearded ladys and painting them. Different groups of people got given different tasks, we were split into groups of zine, making little goods for the event and styling.

I had the task of painting part of the bearded lady, it was good to actually stay in uni and get hands on with working - was nice becuase you get talking to people in your group who you haven’t really spoken to before. Also get a great buzz from making something that has to be good enough for design industries to not look down on, all in all the Carnival was a great idea and a very fun event

    Dreamweaver final pages

These are my final webpages all coded up in Dreamweaver, had help of Dharmesh to start me up but once I got going I started to pick things up and solve problems myself. The problems mainly occurred because I forgot to float/ margin the content- Also found it a hassle when i margined something yet it started it move the footer around.

Its a very basic site and I still need to add rollovers and link the pages together which shouldn’t be too hard. In uni at the moment waiting for Jules to give me  some help, then hopefully  I can be all finished today where I will only have sketchbook and blogging to finish off.

Final Jpegs for my website, I had further developed this site since my last update. I made the content box alot wider where I could fit more content within the box.- I also layed my content out more into 3/4 columns so it looks clearer. The homepage needed alot more content added to it so it would catch the viewers attention- I added latests tweets and latest videos so the viewer can be kept updated.

These are my final 3 website flats that are ready to be sliced and coded tommorow! Gone for the idea of using photography as the main visual for the website, I think using the natural photos gives the fan a certain closeness to the group (if that makes sense)

I will blog the development once i get coding

Here i have redesigned a quick logo to make it look abit fun, completely changed the navigation to make it look abit smarter.

Further developed the homepage and instead of having so many things showing (videos, latest tweets, fans updates) I kept it simple and added 2 of the latest videos…inspiration from Artic monkeys site. I have also developed the social networking icons and added a spotify icon for more marketing.

  15. My first draft - took alot of ideas from my original design of Take That but gave it a different colour scheme. Jules gave me feedback of not having the navigation bar so thick and it looks very corporate, basically mess around with the whole layout. He also reccomended changing the social networking links to keep within the same theme, and possibly redesigning the logo as it looks very bland and doesn’t stand out.

    My 3 main inspiration websites

These 2 websites inspired me for the design look of my website, the original bombay bicycle club website was very plain and boring and contained alot of dark colours. I came across the Artic Monkeys website that was still plain but they displayed it in a nice way, using large spaces to break up the content into columns instead of using boxes. The homepage was also good because it contained alot of information for the viewer to see, headings are clearly shown by the size of the font and the black and white colour scheme really works!

Secondly the Kings of Leon was a real inspiration because of the background it fades from nice, edited photography out into colour, I wanted to keep my design clean and tidy- using clear photos of the band members as the background. I think using nice photography gives the viewer/fan a nice sort of connection with the band.

The third inspired band were The Wombats. I chose this particularly for the navigation, the clean looking text based header is nice and simple- it is clear enough to see the different links aswell.

I will be taking all these site inspirations into account before i redesign band website.

  17. Looking for a different band to redesign, i came across http://www.bombaybicycleclubmusic.com/ - the website is very bland and looks rather tacky for an upcoming band. Everything is really dark and nothing really looks appealing or stands out, the effects used on the Youtube and amazon icons look ridiculous. However i really like the navigation designed on the side instead of across the top like most websites, I will have a go at redesigning the website.
